Do you know the facts about COVID-19 and travel?
- The Center for Disease Control (CDC) discourages nonessential travel to the following destinations: China, Iran, European countries, South Korea, and Malaysia.
- The U.S. Department of State has also issued a Level 3 Global Health Advisory, which urges people to reconsider international travel at this time.
- Those still traveling can enroll with the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive important travel alerts and make it easier to get contacted by the U.S. Embassy in case of an emergency.
How Severe is COVID-19?
Only a few populations are at a greater risk for developing serious cases. Most individuals who have gotten the coronavirus have survived and are doing well. For most people, COVID-19 is not something to fear. However, everyone can take proactive measures to protect our most at-risk communities.
Most confirmed cases of COVID-19 result in minor symptoms.
Most individuals who get COVID-19 will show minor, flu-like symptoms of fever and a cough. Although the virus can lead to shortness of breath, only 20% of cases have required hospitalization.
Mortality rates are MUCH lower compared to past outbreaks.
Sometimes we often forget what has happened in the past. If we compare the mortality rate for coronavirus (estimated 4% as of 3/18/20) versus SARS in 2003 which was 10% and even MERS in 2012 which was 34% we know that compared to past outbreaks, coronavirus doesn’t even compare yet.
Older adults and those with pre-existing medical conditions are at the greatest risk.
If you are older than 50 or have pre-existing medical conditions, particularly with heart or respiratory diseases, you are at a greater risk of developing a severe case
